Secure IT Hardware Logistics & Infrastructure Deployment

Map of the world, with London highlighted

Locations: North London and Enfield, United Kingdom

This case study highlights a secure IT hardware logistics and infrastructure deployment delivered by InstallTech engineers. The project involved transporting mission-critical equipment, installing enterprise hardware, and preparing infrastructure within a secure data centre environment.

Client circuit board

Built and maintain a multi-rack cross DataCentre sites solution. The primary site is located in London, at Goswell Road, currently operated by Stellanor/Colt/Lumen (formerly Level 3), a major enterprise-grade facility generally considered Tier 3, offering redundant power (A/B feeds, N+1 UPS/Generators) and cooling (N+1 HVAC). The secondary site is located in Enfield (North London). Also, the Tier 3 site is operated by Virtus.

Objectives

  • Create a solution providing infrastructure deployed across two independent DataCentre sites

  • Implement active/active high availability zones with real-time data replication

  • Maintain, monitor and manage both sites to ensure zero downtime

Scope of work

  • Architecture, procurement, and delivery of the hardware required for both DC sites, comprising HPE, IBM, Dell and Cisco solutions.

  • Rack, stack, and patch all the cabling according to customer specifications

  • Perform pre-configuration of all the hardware components

  • Build a direct fibre link between the sites

  • Proactively monitor and service parts of the hardware and connectivity

  • Support all onsite jobs, hardware maintenance, and new installations

Technologies used

  • HPE's iLO (Integrated Lights-Out)

  • Cisco IOS

  • VMware Cloud Foundation / Vsphere

  • Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC)

  • IBM Integrated Management Module (IMM)

  • AWS EKS Anywhere

  • Grafana Monitoring

  • Kubernetes (kctl, k9s)

Summary

The solution has been live for more than 10 years. It is undergoing periodical upgrades and maintenance. Recently, it has been redesigned and delivered to host on-prem Kubernetes clusters using AWS EKS Anywhere technology. It helped reduce AWS Cloud bills by over 70% by utilising on-prem resources for computing and storage.
